White House Cyber Summit Sets a Stage for Work Ahead
Experts say that the recent White House summit of President Biden, agency heads, and industry leaders produced a number of positive commitments, but they point out that these will require considerable follow-up.
Holding the summit sent an important signal, according to Ari Schwartz, a former White House staffer who now serves as manager of cybersecurity services at Venable and leads the private sector Cybersecurity Coalition. Kiersten Todt of the nonprofit Cyber Readiness Institute praised the inclusion of the insurance industry, but would like to see more industries represented in future discussions.
Senate Homeland Security chair Gary Peters (D-MI) said the industry commitments “will not only strengthen their own security, but help protect our critical infrastructure and Americans from these relentless threats.” House Homeland Security Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, & Innovation Subcommittee chair Yvette Clarke (D-NY) said there is “more work to be done” on the interplay between government and industry, such as her legislation to require businesses to report cyber incidents.
