USAID Responding to Marburg Outbreak in Rwanda
USAID is a key player on the National Security Council because of its ability to mobilize interventions quickly in response to crises that can develop into larger problems. The Marburg outbreak in Rwanda is a typical example. As described in an October 8th Press Release, USAID responded within days to the outbreak by pre-positioning funds to monitor and control it. A dedicated Marburg Outbreak Response Team is coordinating efforts with the Government of Rwanda and other regional and local entities.
USAID’s competitive advantage on the NSC is its presence on the ground with Mission staff able to program, fund, and issue contracts and grants for needed expertise and support. No other NSC member has this capacity. In fact, no other country has USAID’s presence or capacity in the field.
