US Government Receives More than 130 Applications for Licenses to Supply Huawei

The Department of Commerce has reportedly received more than 130 applications for licenses to continue supplying Huawei following its addition to the “Entity List”. In July, Secretary Wilbur Ross stated that around 50 applications had been filed. None have been granted yet.

American companies supply over $10 billion of components, software, and services to Huawei every year. While Huawei would be crippled without their technology, those suppliers would also suffer significant financial losses. The Commerce Department therefore announced a three-month stay within days of the surprise move in May, and then extended it another three months to November 19. It is unpredictable whether the administration’s policy will change again before then.
