Sen. Warner Seeks Answers about Suspected Universal Health Services Ransomware Attack
Universal Health Services’ 250 U.S. hospitals have resumed operations following a reported ransomware attack that knocked out the chain’s systems for 3 weeks. While systems were down, clinicians used pen and paper to continue providing care, with some patients diverted to alternate facilities. The suspected ransomware – Ryuk – is known to exfiltrate data before shutting down systems, but UHS maintains that there is no evidence of that happening. Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) has written to UHS asking several questions about the attack and what cybersecurity measures UHS had in place to prevent and mitigate it.
