Prioritizing Weapon System Cybersecurity in a Post-Pandemic Defense Department
Morgan Dwyer, a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, argues that the coronavirus pandemic illustrates the impact that invisible vulnerabilities can have, and that the national security community needs to address a tendency to overlook such vulnerabilities, which can place critical systems and infrastructure at risk. “This is especially true for DOD, which often prioritizes making very visible investments in new weapon systems over mitigating invisible vulnerabilities within existing systems,” she writes. The Cyberspace Solarium Commission recently recommended DoD address this area by establishing a permanent, ongoing process to evaluate weapon system cyber vulnerabilities.
