NIST Cyber Advisor Talks about Cybersecurity EO

Kevin Stine, the chief cybersecurity adviser for the National Institute of Standards and Technology, says that the aggressive timelines and requirements of the Biden Administration’s May cybersecurity executive order are a “necessary shock to the system” to help agencies tackle the fundamentals of securing their networks. The latest step under the EO was to give agencies 60 days to identify 12 types of on-premise critical software, and another 12 months to implement critical software protections specified by NIST. Despite the new requirements, Stine says that soliciting industry feedback and fostering an environment where the public and private sectors are collaborating is a top priority for him and the administration.
