EDPB Will Issue Data Protection Guidance on Several Topics Relating to COVID-19

The European Data Protection Board has directed two expert subgroups to prepare guidance on several COVID-19 related topics that have been closely scrutinized by national authorities. They include:

  • Geolocation and other tracing tools, such as the use of aggregated and/or anonymized location data, tracing interactions between data subjects, collection of personal data by apps, data retention in the context of geo-location, functional requirements for contact tracing applications, and timeframe limitations focused on the pandemic.
  • Processing of health data for research purposes, such as for the purpose of advancing COVID-19 research, re-use of medical research data, and the rights of data subjects in an emergency.
