David Miliband says the World is Out of Balance in Discussing IRC’s 2025 Emergency Watchlist with the Washington Post
David Miliband, President and CEO of International Rescue Committee and former Foreign Minister for the UK, spoke with Jonathan Capehart of the Washington Post about IRC’s 2025 Emergency Watchlist report and the urgent humanitarian needs of 300 million people in the world.
The report finds that 80% of these people are in 20 countries, 16 of which are in conflict and subject to vulnerable to climate events. At the top of the list for the second year is Sudan where 30 million out of its total population of 45 million are in need of humanitarian assistance. Gaza is ranked second with 90% of its 2 million people in need of humanitarian assistance.
Miliband’s describes the world as being “out of balance” with 59 active conflicts often fed by disparities between the rich and poor, the global north and south and imbalances between the planet and its people. Syria and the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime is a case study, representing opportunities and risk.
