Congress Introducing More Legislation Focused on Cybersecurity, Enacting Some of It
According to a new study from Third Way, the most recent Congress introduced 40 percent more cybersecurity bills than the one before, but didn’t pass many more of them; the 116th Congress passed 14 cyber-related bills compared to the 11 passed during the prior session. With the exception of election security measures, this legislation tended to be more bipartisan than other issues in Congress, thanks in part to the work of the bipartisan Cyberspace Solarium Commission. Cybersecurity issues brought up by the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing awareness of threats from foreign adversaries contributed to the increase in bipartisanship, as did lawmakers’ increasing familiarity with the issues.
