Commerce Bans 7 Chinese Firms from Buying U.S Tech
The Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security issued an updated entity list adding seven Chinese firms to the list of entities prohibited from buying U.S-made technologies without a waiver. According to BIS, the firms were added to the list because their systems do not align with American national security or foreign policy interests.
“Specifically, these entities are involved in activities that support China’s military actors, its destabilizing military modernization efforts, and/or its weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programs,” officials wrote in a final rule published Friday. The rule specifically notes the firms procure U.S.-made goods to support activities contrary to American interests.
The banned firms are: Tianjin Phytium Information Technology; Shanghai High-Performance Integrated Circuit Design Center; Sunway Microelectronics; the National Supercomputing Center Jinan; the National Supercomputing Center Shenzhen; the National Supercomputing Center Wuxi; and the National Supercomputing Center Zhengzhou. According to the Washington Post, all seven entities are linked to China’s plan to build a next-generation exascale supercomputer.
