Armed Services Chair Says “Vulnerable” National Security Network Needs More Money
House Armed Services Committee Chair Adam Smith (D-WA) wants the country to invest more to protect national security communications and software, arguing that money spent on combat planes would be better spent on “developing the JADC2 [Joint All-Domain Command and Control] vision of a secure communication system that we can protect,” which would connect sensors throughout the military into a single network. He identified this as a higher priority than offensive systems “to exploit other people’s systems.”
Speaking about the controversial National Security Policy Memorandum-13 (NSPM-13) which gives DoD’s cyber operations authority to act prior to White House review in certain circumstances, Smith said that the current arrangement “having NSA and Cyber [Command] together… works fine.”
