FTC Considering New Data Privacy Regulations

The Federal Trade Commission is posting an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking asking whether the commission should further regulate how companies “collect, aggregate, protect, use, analyze, and retain” consumers’ data, and address how they “transfer, share, sell, or otherwise monetize that data in ways that are unfair or deceptive.” The proposed regulations would focus on baseline privacy, data security, and corporate accountability, rather than asking users to agree to lengthy, unread terms of service.
