New York State Proposes Cybersecurity CLE Requirement for Lawyers

The New York State Unified Court System has published a proposal to require state’s lawyers to take one hour of Continuing Legal Education on cybersecurity topics. It would make New York the first state to explicitly require this for its attorneys. As part of their CLE requirements, they would need to complete one CLE credit in a new category called “Cybersecurity, Privacy, and Data Protection.” The category would have two components: ethical obligations for protection of electronic data and communication, and general cybersecurity covering how to use the technology, and applicable laws.
