Biden Says Nation Ready to Respond to Russian Cyber Aggression

As Russia’s troops invaded Ukraine, and its hackers attacked Ukrainian government and financial sites, President Biden warned that the United States government would respond to any aggression against the U.S. in cyberspace. “If Russia pursues cyberattacks against our companies, our critical infrastructure, we are prepared to respond,” Biden said. It is unclear what that response might include, with White House press secretary Jen Psaki discrediting a report describing the possible disruption of Russia’s internet access, electric grid, or railways.

Biden also announced sanctions against Russia’s largest banks, certain members of the country’s elite, and its ability to import cutting-edge technologies, the last of which he said would be “a major hit to Putin’s long-term strategic ambitions.”
