US Government Grants Microsoft License to Export “Mass-Market” Software to Huawei, Extends Temporary General License

The Department of Commerce has granted Microsoft a license to export “mass-market” software such as Windows and MS Office to Chinese technology giant Huawei.

Meanwhile, the department also has extended the Temporary General License allowing US firms – most notably mobile carriers providing service to rural areas of the country – to do business with Huawei for another 90 days. This is the third extension since Commerce first blacklisted Huawei, claiming that there was a reasonable basis to conclude the company was engaged in activities contrary to national security.
